He's standing with his shoulder turned, his chin lifted at a defiant angle, his slim body outlined by fire. Arthur studies him minutely: the pure strong profile, the fair skin and dense black hair, the sudden upward glance of the dark eyes, full of laughter, full of anger, full of mystery. Could any child of Morgause be less than beautiful?
And Mordred smiles a little, and the king's heart falters within him. "It's just as well," the boy says; "I don't think either of us would be glad of that."
