After, Mordred tears himself away, shaking. Peredur touches his arm with a work-worn hand, but he jerks away. "God, don't."

"What's wrong?"

"God!" It's a cry, a curse. "Everything I touch--"

Carefully, Peredur sits up. His body feels strangely loose and light; nevertheless, he's nearing fifty, and the joints protest. He looks at Mordred, who still seems a thin, scarred thirty-five. "What is it?"

"I should have died. You were at peace here, and I--"

"You came back."

"For this?"

"It was good." His heart is still the wild Welsh boy's, fluttering but certain. "It was time. It was right."
