"My nephew has no appreciation for nature," Conrad complains, shaking the soil delicately from his leather gloves.

"Well, you know," Percy says mildly, and sits back on his heels. "It don't take everybody the same."

Conrad spends an hour in the garden every morning, wearing his wide-brimmed hat. He pokes about gingerly, in a ritual he calls "getting his hands dirty", and then retires to his room. Lately, with a child's earnestness, he has taken to weeding, a few plants at a time. Percy smiles at him, at his naive pride. "That's real good. You got a feel for it."
