Mordred walks barefoot on the shingle, and laughs at Sagramore when he complains of the wind. "Christ, you delicate flower. Come here then, I'll keep you warm."

Sagramore smiles down at him. "Will you?"

For answer Mordred catches his hair in one sea-wet hand, pulls him down for a kiss that tastes of the salt air. His body is warm, it's true, and beautifully easy, freed of the tension that always seems to hold him rigid. In the end Sagramore forgets to complain of the cold, and even of the sharp pebbles of the shore pressing into his naked back.

Her face is all curves and angles, white as the moon, and she has a fishing lure tied in her wet green-gold hair. "You're a saucy one," he says, and she laughs.

"Maybe you like a woman with spirit."

"Maybe I do."

The mermaid half lifts herself in the water, the waves lapping at her breasts, her eyes pale and sparkling. For a moment he watches her openly. It would be fever-hot, he thinks, and sweet and cool as nightfall, and it would be over soon.

"Love me," she says, in the voice of the sea.

Mordred stands up. "No."

At this season the winds are fiercer than ever, the water so cold it hurts, but Gaheris stands on the shore, his dark hair blowing.

"You fool--"

Gaheris falls against Mordred, shivering, half laughing. "I am. I am."

"Come on."

Halfway up the hill Gaheris stumbles, off-balance in the wind, and they both go down. "God, I'm sorry."

"Forget it." Mordred doesn't move from where he's fallen, his cheek against Gaheris' hair, as the laughter frays. He pulls his cloak over both of them and holds it down.

"It'll stop," Gaheris murmurs, within that shelter. "It'll stop, won't it?"

"Aye."

This is unexpected and beautiful. Really, I don't know where the mermaid came from, but I like her. And the Sagramore and Gaheris sections are gentle and lovely.

Mermaids turn up in Orkney folklore, as they do basically everywhere with a coastline -- one of these days I'll get around to writing the Mordred/selkie. :D

Thank you!

So lovely to see Mordred get a moment or two without so much angst.
