Notes: Gawain's death at Mordred's hands appears in the Alliterative Morte Arthure; Ragnelle the Loathly Lady in some versions dies young, but in others returns to faerie after five years of marriage. Now I feel pretentious. :P


It seemed a short time since the forest had called her home. But this was not her laughing brother-in-law; there was gray in his hair, and horror in his eyes. "Don't," he whispered.

"I will not harm thee."

He flinched as she knelt beside him. "Don't, don't. Gawain is dead. I-- He should have killed me!"

Had she not seen the shadow? Ragnelle lay down beside him, and held him against her aching heart as he wept; and presently his mouth sought her breast, her hands sought his skin, and they found solace awhile, in that old and sunless place.
