"I dream," the boy whispers. "God, my mother sends me dreams--"
He's shaking all over, his dark eyes wide and blind. Arthur forgets his own forebodings, and takes him by the shoulders, steadying. Mordred flinches, then quiets under the touch.
For the first time he finds himself angry on the boy's behalf. Morgause has wounded him, too.
"Please--"
"Easy, lad. They're only dreams."
But Mordred leans against him with fluid grace, strong arms clasping his waist, hands searching. Of a sudden the heat is stifling.
(Far to the north, alone by candlelight, Queen Morgause moans aloud in ecstasy and triumph.)
