julietveiled!
Melehan stands straight as a spear, suffering his mother's embrace. He's seventeen. The women have gathered to bid him farewell; widows all. In him they see the dead: his father, fallen; their husbands, his uncles, shamefully slain; the cousins he hardly knew.
Tears streak his mother's face, though she will not sob. Lyonors, tall and fair, has less pride.
Last comes Lynet, her eyes dry and hard as stones. "Thou fool," she says. She leans up and kisses his mouth, then pushes him away. "Go."
So he goes, and the heat of her bitterness sustains him through that long night.

c. The actual sirius bizness comment:
It's such a depressing fandom, in general, isn't it? Even in the happier moments, there's a pall of doom over them all, because you just know what's coming eventually-- and this one isn't exactly a happier moment.
I like Melehan - such a boy, such an earnest, wound-up child, with about twenty tons of Living Up To on his poor head. "Straight as a spear" is an especially nice touch, and the differences between the three women (a trio of women always gives me a feeling of witchcraft, I think it's kind of unavoidable, and if we're to make these three a standard coven, obviously his mother has to be the mother, and Lyonors must be the maiden - and I suppose Lynet is prematurely crone'd. It works for her personality, anyway!).
Thank you. <3333

Date: 2007-09-20 05:15 pm (UTC)It really, really is. O tragedy.
Thank you! It was weird trying to write him, since I never have before or really thought about him much, just played with Zara -- which reminds me I must POKE THAT WOMAN -- but yeah, he's carrying way, way too much.
Yes! Which is funny, because these three are about the least witchy in the whole family.

Date: 2007-09-20 09:00 am (UTC)I've adored all things Arthurian ever since I can remember - and recently I got hooked on Boudica, through Manda Scott's quartet then realised it had the same sense of 'you know perfectly well what's coming...'
I need a 'lovely but sad' icon!
