Melehan stands straight as a spear, suffering his mother's embrace. He's seventeen. The women have gathered to bid him farewell; widows all. In him they see the dead: his father, fallen; their husbands, his uncles, shamefully slain; the cousins he hardly knew.

Tears streak his mother's face, though she will not sob. Lyonors, tall and fair, has less pride.

Last comes Lynet, her eyes dry and hard as stones. "Thou fool," she says. She leans up and kisses his mouth, then pushes him away. "Go."

So he goes, and the heat of her bitterness sustains him through that long night.

I've finished them. And even though you know that she has to die in the end, the journey is so worthwhile. And of course there are the other characters as well! A fabulous read!
