In the second year, Vivien comes secretly to Camelot, cloaked in autumn rain. "What do you want?" Mordred asks her bluntly, and she laughs.

"Thy father was more gracious. Are we not allies?"

"Are we?"

"We had a common enemy."

"Your lover, lady?" He almost laughs. "You buried the old liar too late for me."

"I loved him," Vivien says quietly, "though he betrayed me first."

Her eyes are sea-grey, glittering. Watching her, Mordred feels a familiar cold, the wind of home.

"I'll tell thee what I want," she says, "in private."

Mordred kisses her, hard. "Come with me, then."
